Abstract: In this talk I will present my recently published
book about hard-won knowledge produced in and about South Asia
and disseminated through the global networks of the early
modern Portuguese empire. Inextricably connected to expansion
of Catholicism, Portuguese empire developed a set of knowledge
practices–which we call Catholic Orientalism–geared to
parpetuate political ambitions and cultural fantasies of the
early modern Catholic protagonists and their communities in
South Asia and beyond.
