Title:Contemporary regional development in India
Abstract:The Indian government has been following the path of planned economic development since Independence and is concerned about how to achieve high economic growth with equality and to reduce unemployment and poverty. The issues have been given sharp focus in all the plans, and various policies and programmes have been adopted for achieving the objectives. It has been perceived that the despite all concerned effort of balanced regional planning, disparities among regions have been increasing steadily and the benefits of the development have not reached all part of the country in an equitable manner. The Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plan has chosen ‘faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth’ as its central theme. At the backdrop of impressive progress of the economy during last two decades, the paper reviews the inclusive regional development policies adopted by the government at different time points, with special reference to the period of economic reform since 1991.
